You are eligible to apply for British Citizenship or Naturalization if you have held Indefinite Leave to Remain for at least one year. If you are successful you will be granted certificate of naturalization and therefore you can apply for British Passport. When making your ‘Naturalisation application’, foreign nationals must also meet requirements of ‘good character’, the ability to communicate in English (or Welsh or Scottish Gaelic) and ‘knowledge of life in the UK’ (as assessed by a Life in the UK test – which is also required for those applying for settlement).
You can apply for citizenship if you’ve lived in the UK for 5 years and have had one of the following for 12 months:
1. Indefinite leave to remain in the UK
2. ‘Settled status’ (also known as ‘indefinite leave to remain under the EU Settlement Scheme’)
3. Indefinite leave to enter the UK (permission to move to the UK permanently from abroad) You do not need to wait 12 months to apply if you’re married to a British citizen.
